Woo Hoo for Four-Day Weeks!

<img src="http://heatherchad.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/13610/0x0_632269.png" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Welcome back from what I hope was a fun, restful weekend! This week I recorded students reading our vocabulary words. The audio is a little off - I'm not sure what happened there...the acoustics in my classroom must be awful, but they did a great job. Be on the lookout for our Lions' Team Podcast - coming soon!

This week's vocabulary words are:

Felicitous- adj. happy or delightful
Malevolence- n. ill will or evil intentions
Odious- adj. deserving hate or contempt
Pertinacity- n. stubborn persistence or act of refusing to yield on an opinion or belief
Scrupulous- adj. very principled, very careful and conscientious

Tonight's meaningful sentences should be meaningful and contain at least one adverb. An adverb modifieds a verb, and adjective, or another adverb.

This week we will work towards finishing the play "The Diary of Anne Frank" and get started on our Baby Research Project. You six research questions are due Friday. We'll work on them together Thursday and Friday.

Many of you are beginning to think about extra credit opportunities. Here's your first. Leave me a comment here using at least three of the vocabulary words we;ve studied so far. You must use them IN CONTEXT. In other words, use them as if you were having a conversation with me. If your words are used correctly, I will add 5 points to your meaningful sentence grade for this week.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE leave only your first name and last initial!!!

Here's what's up for this week - May 15 - 19

<img src="http://heatherchad.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/13610/0x0_632271.bmp" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Hey guys!

Let me first apologize for the poor audio quality of this podcast - I was recording while driving!

I'm sorry I could not be at school this week to finish up "Much Ado," but my grandfather passed away and I am in California attending his funeral. I will be back Thursday!

I will be checking several things upon my return:
1. Post-Reading Act IV
2. Post-Reading Act V
3. Dogberryisms
4. Responses
5. Memorizations!!! (Have you been practicing?)

Today (Monday) and tomorrow (Tuesday) you'll have an opportunity to listen to the play while you read along.

Thursday we'll watch the movie together - I think you'll really like it!

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to post them here, or on the Discussion Board. I'll do my best to check them all while I'm gone.

See you Thursday!

Week 18, and then three to go!

<img src="http://heatherchad.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/13610/0x0_632272.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Ohmigosh can you believe that we've only got three weeks left? I don't know whether to say I hope it goes fast or that I hope it goes slow! Ok so yeah I hope it goes fast, but I will miss you guys, for like a whole week, at least!

Just kidding!

Some dates to know: Your end-of-the-year project is due Thursday, May 4! Remember that you need to turn in your:

1. Six questions
2. Research
3. Notecards (25 - 40)
4. Outline
5. Rough draft(s)
6. Final draft

This week's meaningful sentences should be meaningful and imperative. These should be easy for you because you guys have people bossing you around all the time, I'm sure!

Don't forget to get your copy of the Folger's Edition of "Much Ado About Nothing" soon!

If you haven't left advice for those poor unsuspecting 8th-graders-to-be on the message board yet, click on the link on the right side of the page and just do it!

It's Friday! Woo hoo!

<img src="http://heatherchad.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/13610/0x0_632273.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Well, today you should be working feverishly at typing up the final draft of your research paper. Remember that it should be 12 point font, Times New Roman, and double-spaced. Be sure to do a word count to be sure that you're going to meet the minimum expectations. That's 500 words for regular classes, and 750 for Pre-AP. Remember also to type up your bibliography. You should have a resource paper there with you in the lab to help you.

If you have all SIX parts of your research paper ready to turn in on Monday, go ahead and turn it in on Monday - it's a great way to earn some bonus points! The official due date is Thursday, May 4.

Several of you are looking to earn extra credit right now, and I really do want to give that opportunity to those of you who are willing to work for it. This opportunity is simple. Visit the KMS Word Nerds Discussion board (see link at right - do you remember your login and password?) and contribute some advice to next year's eighth grade. There are already a few pearls of wisdom there, so read them first to get an idea of what I'm looking for.

I'm so excited about starting Shakespeare next week! Is it hard? Yes. Can you read it? Yes. Will you understand it? Yes, if you pay attention.

Enjoy your weekend!

Chapter 36 - Respectable Huck Joins the Gang

<img src="http://heatherchad.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/13610/0x0_632274.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Huck's not really diggin' the Widow Douglas and all her finery. And he has to go to church, too! And bathe! Oh, the humanity!

It's a good thing Tom's looking out for his best interest, though, right? How can a guy be a respectable robber if he doesn't bathe?

There is certain satisfaction in finishing a good book. I enjoyed ol' Tom Sawyer much more than I expected, and I reckon I'll go on and read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, too. How else am I gonna get this hickified voice out of my system?

Test tomorrow guys! Reach back into the recesses of your mind and consider this about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: plot, setting, conflict, resolution, and theme...

Shakespeare's up next! Woo hoo!

<img src="http://heatherchad.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/13610/0x0_632286.jpg" alt="itunes pic" /><br />So here we are in the computer lab...there are a couple of things I'd like for you to take care of!

First, if you haven't read/annotated Chapters 23 - 26, do it NOW. You'll get a quiz over these chapters when you leave today. It will be due on Monday!

<a href="http://express.perseus.com/perseus/surveys/1734848031/1a419730.htm">Second, click here to take my survey, please!</a>

Third, leave me a comment here, because, well...because I'd do it for you!

Fourth, click on the link to the Discussion Board. Login first - use your first name and last initial (no spaces) and use the password you use to login to these computers. You'll find a section there called "Here's how to earn your grade today." Click it, and follow the instructions. Then explore the board a little and post anywhere you can! I'd like to see some good dialogue going, but unless we really activate the board, it won't happen. Start some new topics! Say hey to a friend in another class period! (Just know that I have to approve all posts, so it might take a few minutes to show up...)

I've got a little assignment for you to complete from the KMS Word Nerds Discussion Board. First, log in and type in your password. Find the forum for Tom Sawyer Chapters 3 & 4 and following the instructions in the first post.

Then, leave a post in the Randomness Rules section!

Because it does, you know.

When you're done with that, leave a comment here, just because.

Oh yeah, and don't forget to read Chapters 5 & 6. I've recorded both of them in super-hick voice just for you!

TTTT! (any guesses?)

I don’t know about you, but I got a big kick out of reading all of those Mark Twain quotes! He is too cool!

Today – yes, it’s true – we’re actually going to (gasp!) start reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer!

First, click on the green arrow at the bottom of this entry to hear a quick introduction to the novel - read by your illustrious teacher.

You can read along with me by clicking here:
<a href="http://vans.burlesonisd.net/blogs/hsanders/The%20Adventures%20of%20Mark%20Twain%20by%20Mark%20Twain%20and%20Introduction%202.doc">Click here! Click here!</a>

Ok. So now you hopefully have a slight idea of what to expect. Let’s get started!

First, click the link below to open one of the many websites that contains an online version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Remember to “Open in a New Window”!

<a href="http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rgs/sawyr-table.html">http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rgs/sawyr-table.html</a>

Once you’ve got it open, minimize it so that you can come back here and open the next link.

Click the link below, grab those headphones, and enjoy the Preface and first two chapters of……(drum roll, please!) The Adventures of Tom Sawyer!

<a href="http://vans.burlesonisd.net/blogs/hsanders/01_%20Tom%20Plays%2C%20Fights%2C%20And%20Hides.mp3">Click here to listen to the Preface and Chapter 1</a>

<a href="http://vans.burlesonisd.net/blogs/hsanders/02%2002_%20The%20Glorious%20Whitewasher.mp3">Click here to listen to Chapter 2!</a>

When you’ve finished listening, click the link below to visit my new Discussion Board! It’s really just another place for us to communicate about what’s going on in class. You have to login to post, and I’ll come by and give you all your login name and password. For the time being I’ve entered your email as my own, but if you have an email account I’d like to use it instead. That way if you post to the board and someone responds to your post, you’ll get an email notification.

Vocabulary Quiz tomorrow! Most likely I’ll include ALL TWENTY words this time! Do you remember how I asked for the part of speech on the last test? I liked that…(hint, hint!)

See you tomorrow!

If you didn’t finish your Mark Twain assignment from Monday, scroll down a bit, find Monday's entry, and go through the links again. Remember to send me a Virtual Mark Twain postcard, too! Follow the instructions that are there to be sure I receive it!

Today we’re going to continue learning about Mark Twain. I expect us to actually start reading Tom Sawyer tomorrow, so please be sure to have your book or a single subject spiral with you when you come to class tomorrow!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Mark Twain as I’ve been researching websites for you, it’s that he was a really hilarious guy. He cracks me up!

Below you will find a couple of links to Mark Twain quotations. If you remember from the video yesterday, Mark Twain was a wild child! I think he’d be so cool to actually meet, if only to get a closer look at that hair! (Ha ha!)

First, open a Word document.

Take some time and explore each of these sites, and choose 5 quotes that really appeal to you in one way or another. Maybe you just really “get” Mark Twain’s humor, or maybe something he said struck you as being poignantly true. Write your five quotes down on a piece of paper before you submit them as a comment, because I want you to get comfortable reading them – I may stick a microphone in your face very soon!

Here are the links: Remember to right-click them and select “Open as a new document.”

<a href="http://www.twainquotes.com/quotesatoz.html">http://www.twainquotes.com/quotesatoz.html</a>

The quotes on this page are arranged alphabetically by topic. Choose an appropriate topic, of course. (Even though Mark Twain often didn’t…)

<a href="http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/mark_twain.html">http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/m/mark_twain.html</a>

<a href="http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Mark_Twain/">http://www.quotationspage.com/quotes/Mark_Twain/</a>

Once you’ve written your quotes on paper, go ahead and copy and paste the text from your Word document and submit your quotes to me.

<a href="http://express.perseus.com/perseus/surveys/1734848031/5c8f0f65.htm">Now click here to take a survey for me!</a>

Hey Guys! Welcome back! I hope you guys had a fabulous break!

If you haven’t done so yet, be sure to take a listen to my Spring Break Word Nerds Pocast, which is a couple of entries down. Maybe you’re one of the featured speakers!

Also, the video podcast in the entry below addressees your vocabulary and meaningful sentences for this week.

This week we’re starting The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. If you don’t have your own personal copy of the book yet, no big deal, really, but you HAVE to have a single subject spiral notebook to keep your annotations in. I’ve been trying to remind you of this regularly, so I’m going to be picky about it…

Today (Monday) in the computer lab we’re going to do a couple of things to prepare for reading Tom Sawyer. Before we start reading I’d like for you to have a good sense of who Mark Twain was, so I have several links collected here for you to visit, and before you leave the lab today you must leave me a comment with the answers to the questions I’ve listed here. I’m taking a grade, so get busy!

Begin by opening a Word Document and type all of your answers there. When you’ve answered all of them, copy your text, and paste it into a comment.

Follow the following link to a PBS Mark Twain chronology.

http://www.pbs.org/marktwain/learnmore/chronology.html

Read through the events that shaped Mark Twain’s life. Use that timeline to answer the following questions:

1.	In what year was Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) born?
2.	How old was he when he spent two years “learning” the Mississippi River?
3.	In what year was The Adventures of Tom Sawyer published?
4.	In what year did Mark Twain die?
5.	Why is the year Mark Twain died significant?
6.	Name three other works written by Mark Twain besides The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Click below to visit The Mark Twain House & Museum in Connecticut. Read the article there and use it to answer #7.

http://www.marktwainhouse.org/teacher/travelin.shtml

7. Where did the name “Mark Twain” come from?

I imagine many of you have no idea what The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is about, so let me satisfy your undying curiosity with a link to a great summary:

http://www.bibliomania.com/0/0/54/98/frameset.html

(Notice also that this is one of the many websites that offers the full text of the book…)

Now let’s look at the characters in the story. In the preface of the book, Twain confides that “most of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred.” While the names are different, the characters in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer are based upon real people in Mark Twain’s life. Follow the link below and use the information there to answer the questions:

http://www.marktwainmuseum.org/Characters.html

9.	Who is the character of Tom Sawyer based upon?
10. Who was the model for the character of Aunt Polly?
11. What location in the book is now known as Mark Twain Cave, and where is it located?

Do you remember when we talked about Banned Books Week earlier last semester? Visit the following link to see why Mark Twain is no stranger to Banned Books, and answer the questions that follow:

http://www.boondocksnet.com/twainwww/index_bbw.html

12. Other than Tom Sawyer, name TWO books by Mark Twain that have been banned.
13. Why was Tom Sawyer banned?
14. When is Banned Books Week this year?

If you haven’t ever spent time at the Internet Movie Data Base, you’re missing out! Click the link below and browse all the films that have been made based on Mark Twain's novels and stories.

http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0878494/

15. How many films are listed?

Now choose TWO of the Tom Sawyer films listed and answer the following questions for each:

16. What is the title of the film?
17. In what year was it made?
18. Who played Tom Sawyer?

Below is a link to some virtual Tom Sawyer postcards! Included in your grade today will be a postcard that you send to me. After clicking the link, choose a postcard and fill in the blanks. In the “To” field, type in my name, and use this email: hsandersteacher@sbcglobal.net

In the “From” field, type in your name (first name and last initial, please) and use this email rather than your email address: hsanders@burlesonisd.net In the “Message” field, tell me: a. why you chose that postcard, and b. the most interesting thing you read today about either Mark Twain or The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Please put your first and last name in the message as well. Click “Preview” and then send it off!

http://www.boondocksnet.com/postcard/index_mt01.html

Ok…now for your answers. Click the “comments” link below to paste your answers from your Word Document into the “Comment” field. Be sure to use your first name and last initial, and don’t add an email address.
